  • City by-laws and trees on your property:

The City of Toronto has many by-laws in place to protect the Urban Forest. The go to

  • Trees within 33’ from centre of roadway belong to the City
  • Properties on Ravine Lots have more stringent restrictions
  • All other trees are the responsibility of the homeowner
  • Trees on the property line typically belong to the homeowner with the majority
  • f the tree on their property though this can often lead to challenges between

neighbours.

The City will respond to requests to prune and maintain city trees on your front lawn.

Most properties within this area fall within Toronto & East York District (see map as

follows)

Applications for tree work typically take 6-8 weeks to process.

Alternatively you can work with private contractors

Protected & unprotected trees:

  • ALL CITY TREES ARE PROTECTED.
  • You can request the city prune their tree or apply to have a contractor perform the

work. The city does it for free, the contractor for a fee.

  • All other non City Trees on private property with a minimum diameter of 12” measured

at 4 ½’ from the ground are protected under City by-law. A quick test is if the

circumference at 4 ½’ from ground measures less than 37 ½ “ then the diameter is

under 12” and the tree can be removed without a permit at the homeowners expense.

  • Private trees do not require a removal permit if they are DEAD, imminently hazardous
  • r terminally diseased. However the latter two require an Arborist Report to request an

exemption.

  • Trees along property boundaries that interfere with Bell/Rogers lines are the

responsibility of the homeowner to be kept clear of the lines.

Ravine lots:

  • Toronto is home to many natural ravines and green spaces. Properties surrounding

these landforms have additional stipulations as outlined in the City by-laws.

  • Regular tree protection policies apply to Ravine lots however homeowners are required

to take special care when removing or pruning trees.

  • There are restrictions regarding removals as well as discarding brush and fill as to

where and how much. Details are available at

Working with the city:

  • The City of Toronto is eager to assist homeowners to facilitate proper arboriculture and

long term tree care. If trees require pruning or removal the city is not that hard to

deal with if you can find the right contact.

  • Permit applications to remove Private Trees are class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'00 and require an Arborist to

prepare a report and provide a recommendation as to why the tree should be removed.
